Master of Social Service (M.S.S.)

  • Early Action: Dec. 15

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university (Note: Undergraduates completing their senior year of college may also apply. Accepted students must provide a final degree transcript before classes begin).
  • Personal statement: Please see online application for essay prompt. The average length of the statement is two pages, double-spaced.
  • Three Letters of Recommendation (Note: If you have been out of school for 5 years or less, two letters must come from academic references. Applicants who have been out of school for more than 5 years may submit professional recommendations.)
  • Official transcripts (from all colleges and universities attended). Please email official transcripts to gradadmissions@brynmawr.edu.
  • Âé¶¹AV interview: Once your written application is complete, you will be contacted by the Office of Âé¶¹AV Âé¶¹AV to schedule your interview.
  • The MSS program does not require standardized test scores for admission.
  • The MSS program does not offer social work course or practicum credit for life experience or previous work experience.

Master of Social Service (M.S.S.) Advanced Standing Program

For students who have earned their B.S.W. in the last five years.

  • Feb. 28 (including first semester grades if you have not already graduated)
  • Submit an .
  • Bachelor in Social Work (B.S.W.) degree from a Council on Social Work Education accredited program within 5 years of application
  • Minimum overall GPA of 3.0
  • Personal statement: Please see online application for essay prompt.
  • Three Letters of Recommendation, one from each of the following:
    • B.S.W. Program Director
    • A practicum instructor
    • A faculty member
  • Official transcripts (from all colleges and universities attended). Please email official transcripts to gradadmissions@brynmawr.edu.
  • Âé¶¹AV interview: Once your written application is complete, you will be contacted by the Office of Âé¶¹AV Âé¶¹AV to schedule your interview.

January 1, 2026

  • Official transcripts (from all colleges and universities attended). Please email official transcripts to gradadmissions@brynmawr.edu.
    • International applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree. If your degree was earned at an institution outside of the United States, we require that you have your transcripts evaluated by a third-party service like World Education Services (WES). 

    • Applicants with a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree from an international institution may be eligible for Advanced Standing status. You must submit an equivalence report from the Council on Social Work Education's International Social Work Degree Recognition and Evaluation Service (ISWDRES) to qualify.

  • English Language Proficiency

    • International students whose first language is not English are required to submit official TOEFL or IELTS scores. The GSSWSR requires a minimum 100 on the TOEFL iBT or a minimum 7.0 on the IELTS. 
    • Exceptions may be made for applicants who:
      • have lived in the U.S. for three or more years (proof of residency required).
      • have graduated from a college or university at which the language of instruction is English.
    • If you would like to request a TOEFL/IELST waiver, please email the Office of Âé¶¹AV Âé¶¹AV at gradadmissions@brynmawr.edu to formally request a waiver. 
  • Âé¶¹AV interview: Once your written application is complete, you will be contacted by the Office of Âé¶¹AV Âé¶¹AV to schedule your interview.
  • International applicants interested in financial aid are eligible for institutional grants awarded by the College. 
  • International students admitted to the Âé¶¹AV School of Social Work and Social Research will be required to complete an Entry Document Application Form issued by the Office of International Services and Advising. This form must be completed and returned before an I-20 form (certificate of eligibility for F-1 status) is issued.
  • International students must be enrolled full-time to be eligible for an F-1 Visa. 

Ph.D. in Social Work

The application cycle for Fall 2026 opens on August 1. Ph.D. applications submitted after December 15 will be considered on a rolling basis as space is available in the program. The application deadline for international students applying to our Ph.D. program is December 15.

  • Submit an
  • Master's degree in social work or a related field (must come from an accredited university)
  • Undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Âé¶¹AV GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • Two years of post-M.S.W. work experience (recommended, not required)
  • Personal statement
  • One to two writing samples
  • Three letters of recommendation (two should be academic references)
  • Official transcripts (from all colleges and universities attended)
  • We strongly recommend attending a virtual Ph.D. Open House prior to submitting your application to the Ph.D. program.

Consistent with our model, all Ph.D. students are funded equally, and do not compete for basic financial support during coursework.  We support all Ph.D. students to engage deeply in doctoral training with full tuition waivers and substantial stipends to offset costs of living.
